The string of islands forming the Écréhous archipelago is between Jersey and France. I had kept a photo from a magazine of one little cluster for many years without knowing where it was. Then my sister took me on a trip to Jersey and I recognised it! I took a flying lesson over to France and along the coast so that I could photograph it from all sides. What struck me was the way the whole scene changed with only a slight difference in the height of the tide. I was also tempted to make a colour engraving because there were all these bright red roofs – but the structure prevailed.
