Old London Bridge

I have always been fascinated by bridges, connections and relationships. The underlying, historical or geological origins of places are also endlessly compelling.

I spent time researching at the Museum of London and the Dock Museum where they had a model of what this bridge might have looked like. I came home with armfuls of books and brochures.

The stanchions had to be convincing so I spent a long time working out the shape and scale of these before transferring the final drawing of them onto the block. The houses, water and other details were then added freehand, making it up as I progressed with the engraving. I particularly enjoyed working on the trading and other activity in the water.

Old London Bridge is in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum.
