This is Berlin, soon after the Wall came down, with the space between sectors waiting to be filled. Turkish families – Gästarbeiters – had built dwellings of sorts and were trying to exist in a fairly hopeless situation. They still maintained standards, dressing as normal and putting cloths on their tables.

The position of the wall was marked on the ground with large paving slabs and on each side of the devastated area were huge residential blocks facing the canyon but blind to the immigrant families trying to survive.
