There always seems to be an association with an event in most of the engravings I make. I was having a solo exhibition and running a course at Edinburgh Printmakers and stayed there for a week exploring and sketching during free time. I was fascinated by John Knox’s house and sat at the café making a detailed drawing. But having sorted out all the intricate details in my drawing, I had no wish to re-work it on a block. On the other hand, my fairly rough sketch of the castle from Prince’s Street lingered in my mind until I found time to engrave it.
